The condition e.g. lamp temperature of gas discharge lamp (10) is detected. The start up value of the electric power fed into the gas discharge lamp at the beginning of the startup phase is selected and set based on the detected temperatures. An independent claim is included for device for controlling power supplied to gas discharge lamp of motor vehicle.
