The device has input/output (I/O) access points combined in a model configuration field (4) and/or hardware functionalities in a functional configuration field (6) and/or hardware interfaces in an interface configuration field (8) to a parent unit (13) i.e. parent block. The parent unit in a reduced representation (15) represents all input and output ports of the I/O access points or the hardware functionalities or the hardware interfaces by common input and output ports, where the I/O access points comprise the parent unit. An independent claim is also included for a computer program comprising a set of instructions for configuring a control system.
