The invention relates to a method for dying keratin fibers, especially human hair, using dying agents which are applied to the fiber. The dying agents comprise; A) 2-oxocarboxylic acid derivatives with formula (I), wherein R<1> represents a hydrogen atom, a C1-C4-alkyl group, a carboxyl radical, a carboxylate radical, an aryl group, benzyl group or heteroaryl group, which can be substituted by one or more C1-C4-alkyl group(s), C1-C4-alkoxy group(s), C1-C4-hydroxyalkoxy group(s), hydroxy group(s), carboxy group(s), sulfo group(s) or nitro group(s); X represents O<->, OH, a C1-C4-alkoxy group or an NR<2>R<3>-group, in which R<2> and R<3> are the same or different and they represent hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl or hydroxy-C2-C4-alkyl, whereby, if X represents NR<2>R<3>, radicals R<2> and R<3> can, together with the nitrogen atom, also form a heterocyclic ring. A) is used in conjunction with; B) at least one compound with a primary or secondary amino group or hydroxy group selected from primary or secondary aliphatic or aromatic amines, nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, oligopeptides constructed from 2 to 9 amino acids, and aromatic hydroxy compounds, and/or from at least one CH-active compound.
