PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium in which each magnetic domain of a recording layer is accurately transferred to a reproducing layer even at a high recording density and in which the transferred magnetic domain can be accurately detected. SOLUTION: The magneto-optical recording medium 10 has a light transmissive substrate 1, an underlayer 2, a reproducing layer 3, a recording layer 4 and a protective layer 5. The reproducing layer 3 comprises a 1st magnetic layer that is an longitudinally magnetized film at room temperature and becomes a perpendicularly magnetized film at a prescribed temperature or above and a 2nd magnetic layer in which the magnetization vanishes in a prescribed region and the longitudinal magnetization is retained in the remaining region at the prescribed temperature or above. When the length of the region of the 2nd magnetic layer in which the magnetization vanishes is made nearly equal to the shortest domain length of the recording layer 4, each magnetic domain of the recording layer 4 is transferred to the 1st magnetic layer by way of only the region of the 2nd magnetic layer in which the magnetization has vanished and the periphery of the magnetic domain transferred to the 1st magnetic layer is exchange-coupled with the longitudinal magnetization of the 2nd magnetic layer.
