PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a heat developable image recording material which is used for a photoengraving, particularly for a scanner or an image setter and improves the insufficient mechanical strength of a brittle coating film easy to be flawed or the like, the adhesiveness of an image forming layer to an upper protective layer after heat development and the occurrence of white powder. SOLUTION: In the production of a heat developable image recording material having an image forming layer and a protective layer adjacent to the top of the image forming layer on one face of the substrate and a backing layer on the other face of the substrate, the image forming layer and the protective layer are simultaneously formed by coating and drying, and heating is carried out from the backing layer side of the heat developable image recording material in the drying. When the heat developable image recording material has two or more protective layers, the protective layer adjacent to the image recording layer contains a polymer having an I/O value of <=0.60 as a binder and at least one of the outer protective layers contains the polymer having a higher I/O value than the above polymer as the binder.
