Use of nimesulide for treating neurodegenerative conditions; and pharmaceuticals comprising them

Use of nimesulide as a medicament for treating a neurodegenerative disease. The amount of nimesulide present in the pharmaceutical composition results in exposure of the affected neurons to a local concentration of nimesulide of one micromolar or a lower concentration that inhibits neuronal cell death by at least 20 percent. Also disclosed is a transgenic mouse carrying a gene encoding the human cyclooxygenase-2 gene under the control of a neuron-specific promoter.
