PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a latex for a release paper undercoat which forms an undercoat having gas barrier properties and adhering well to a silicone and which gives recyclable release paper by subjecting an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomer, a conjugated diene monomer, an aromatic vinyl monomer, and other copolymerizable vinyl monomers to emulsion polymerization so that the resultant latex has a specified gel content. SOLUTION: A radically polymerizable monomer composition is prepared by mixing 1-10 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomer, 10-70 wt.% conjugated diene monomer, 10-70 wt.% aromatic vinyl monomer, and 0-50 wt.% other vinyl monomers copolymrizable with the foregoing monomers. After up to 0.3 pt.wt. compound having a mercapto group is added to 100 pts.wt. above-prepared monomer composition, the composition is subjected to emulsion polymerization in the presence of a chain transfer agent, a surfactant, and a radical polymerization initiator. Thus is obtained a latex for a release paper undercoat having a gel content of 80% or higher, an average particle size of 40-400 nm, a Tg of -40 to 30 deg.C, and a solid concentration of 40-60 wt.%.
