PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicaments and agrochemicals by reaction of 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone or 3- chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst. SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by charging a reactor with (A) 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone or (B) 3-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone and a catalyst followed by introducing chlorine into the reactor to carrying out a reaction pref. at 20-150 deg.C; wherein the chlorine may be in any form such as of gas, liquid or solvent solution, its amount to be used being pref. >=2 mol per mol of the component A, or pref. >=1 mol per mol of the component B, and the catalyst to be used is pref. a trivalent phosphorus compound of the formula: P(R)3 (R is allyl or the like) (e.g. triphenylphosphine).
