PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize black display, and improve contrast. SOLUTION: Slight light is prevented from leaking in black display by correcting a decrease in a terminal potential of a liquid crystal at the time of displaying black by driving the liquid crystal with the potential of a liquid crystal layer having spontaneous polarization offset to the polarity at which transmittance becomes zero.
