An apparatus (20) for the production of gas from water and aqueous solutions by electrolysis, for example of hydrogen and oxygen gas from water. The apparatus comprises a reaction vessel (22) with a cathode (42) adjacent the circumferential side wall (28) of the vessel, a rotatable anode (44) separated from the cathode by a gap (46), a liquid inlet port (34) for the inflow of aqueous feedstock, and one or more outlet ports (72) for the outflow of gas and liquid. A mixture of gases is produced and may be separated from the water exiting the electrolytic cell by a downstream separator (86).
