<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a skew detection device for an optical communication system, capable of detecting the amount of skew in a short time. <P>SOLUTION: An optical communication system comprises a transmitter that multiplexes and transmits a transmission signal and a receiver that receives the received signal from the transmitter for demultiplexing. The transmitter includes pattern generating means 103 that generates a pattern signal to multiplex and transmit the pattern signal comprised of a periodic pattern in which a predetermined data position in the one periodic pattern changes instead of a transmission signal coded by DQPSK.
