PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus wherein the extra length rate of an overhead optical fiber cable can be measured continuously without stopping a machine and without sampling a sample. SOLUTION: In the apparatus, a cable body part 2 is supported by a supporting wire part 1, and the extra length rate of the overhead optical fiber cable is measured in an on-line manner. The apparatus is provided with correction means 4, 5 which flatten the meandering face of the body part 2, a camera device 6 which images the shape of the meandering face and a computing and processing device 7 which finds the square of the maximum value of a slack amount on the basis of an imaged image so as to calculate the extra length rate and which compares the calculated extra length rate with a reference value.
