The apparatus (10) has a input unit (12) for inputting coins, and coin storage units (18,20) that stores the coins. A transport unit (16) is provided with switch modules (38,40) for transporting the input coins to coin storage unit. The coins are transported along transport paths (48,50) when switch module (38) is in first and second switch positions, respectively. The coins are transferred to coin storage unit along different transport path when switch module (40) is in third switch position.
