<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform cranking appropriately when a restart condition is satisfied in a period in which engine rotation speed is dropped in the case of automatic stop of the engine. <P>SOLUTION: In an ECU 40, when an automatic stop condition is satisfied, an engine 20 is automatically stopped, after that, when the restart condition is satisfied, cranking by a starter 10 is started, and the engine 20 is restarted. Also, the ECU 40 performs prediction of engine rotation speed in a period that engine rotation speed is dropped when the engine 20 is stopped automatically, and when movement to a ring gear 22 side of a pinion 14 is started accompanying the thing that the restart condition is satisfied in the rotation-dropped period, it is discriminated whether or not transfer to an engagement state of the pinion 14 and the ring gear 22 is caused during inversion of an engine output shaft 21, based on the predicted engine rotation speed.
