A method and apparatus for an electronic device and associated sensors/transmitters to determine when to disable or enable an electronic mobile communication/computational device in a vehicle when the electronic mobile communication/computational device is being used in an unsafe manner or, when legally mandated not to be used; to disable starting or operating the vehicle, to sound an alarm when the mobile device is being used in an unsafe manner in a vehicle, or, when legally mandated not to be used; or, to safely slow down and bring a vehicle to a safe stop when a mobile communication device is being used in an unsafe manner in a vehicle, or, when legally mandated not to be used The embodiment of the invention applies to portable electronic mobile communication/computational devices or devices that are integrated into a vehicle, such as in a dashboard or console. The method and apparatus also determine if the mobile electronic communication/computational device is in the vehicle.
