<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve assembling performance, by holding a ball being an engaging body by a clutch member, when assembling a cylinder device. <P>SOLUTION: A piston 12 connected with a piston rod 2 is fitted to a cylinder member 3, and the piston rod 2 is energized by a coil spring 27 via a clutch member 24. When the projecting length of the piston rod 2 is less than a predetermined value, the ball 26 engages with an inner peripheral clutch groove 18 and fixes a holding member 24 to a guide sleeve 17, and spring force is not made to act on the piston rod 2 by releasing the piston rod 2. When the projecting length of the piston rod 2 is the predetermined length or more, the ball 26 engages with an outer peripheral clutch groove 23 and releases the clutch member 24 from the guide sleeve 17, and the spring force is made to act on the piston rod 2 by being fixed to the piston rod 2.
