The method involves utilizing application of determined force distribution on a surface of an operating element of a motor car and/or capturing a determined foot position by a driver and/or implementation of determined foot movement of the driver as a defined handling of the driver, where the foot movement is detected by a foot space sensor (4) e.g. ultrasonic and optical sensors. The force distribution is determined by a resistive sensor (3) e.g. strain gauge and piezoelectric, inductive and capacitive sensors. An operating pedal i.e. active operating pedal, is utilized as a control element. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance device for carrying out an operating method.
