An automatic gain controller (AGC) (2) is disclosed. The AGC comprises an input for monitoring a signal associated with an amplifier (1; 4) and a gain control circuit for controlling the gain of the amplifier (1; 4) in response to the monitored signal, wherein the gain control circuit is adapted to control the gain of the amplifier (1; 4) in accordance with a gain control function having continuously variable attack and release time constants, both of which depend on the amplitude of the monitored signal.
