PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide data reproducing apparatus that allows a user to easily select a position for program search when searching for the reproduction position. SOLUTION: According to input from an operation part 2, a selection frame 1 and a selection frame 2 of a 9-division screens on a menu screen are identified, the period of reproduction from the specified selection frame 1 to the selection frame 2 is divided into nines, and addresses of encoded image data corresponding to screens of head frames in respective partial moving images corresponding to divided periods are calculated respectively. Nine pieces of encoded image data corresponding to the calculated addresses are read out of a hard disk drive 10 and decoded by an MPEG decoder 12, and screens corresponding to the nine pieces of decoded image data are embedded at specified positions on the menu screen.
