The method involves arranging active and backup control units (12, 14) with respect to a peripheral device (16) in different operating conditions. Synchronization signals are transmitted from an active unit, which is in an active condition, to the backup unit, which is in a resting condition. Activity signals are transmitted from the active unit to the peripheral device. Testing is performed by the backup unit whether the peripheral device receives one activity signal within a preset time and whether the backup unit is not changed from the resting condition to the active condition. An independent claim is also included for a network with two control devices and a peripheral device.
