PURPOSE: An internal combustion engine is provided to achieve maximum efficiency by adjusting a valve stroke and an angle at each operating point. CONSTITUTION: An internal combustion engine comprises a plurality of cylinders, a crank case(2), a cylinder head(3), a cylinder head cover(4), a cam shaft housing(6), a cam shaft, a sliding cam, and an actuator(16). The cam shaft and the sliding cam are located on the cam shaft housing. The cam shaft is rotatably supported to operate a valve. The cam shaft, the sliding cam, and the cam shaft housing are formed as one assembled unit to be able to be installed on the lower part of the cylinder head. Said one unit can be assembled in the cam shaft housing with the sliding cam which can be displaced in an axial direction.
