PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a television receiver which has no need of a high power amplifier and is usable for viewing without bothering people around a user even in a noisy environment. SOLUTION: The television receiver 100 comprises a microcomputer 6, a comparator 5 connected to the microcomputer 6, a detector 3 connected to the comparator 5, a microphone 1 connected to the detector 3 through a microphone amplifier 2, and a memory 4 connected to the comparator 5 for storing a specified set value N1. When the output of the detector 3 is greater than a specified set value N1 in the memory 4, the microcomputer 6 turns on a changeover switch 13 to send out the output of a character information circuit 12 to a synthesizer 14. The synthesizer 14 combines picture signals output from a TV receiving demodulator circuit 8 with character information output from the character information circuit 12, and a display 15 displays a picture of picture signals of the demodulator circuit 8 and superimposed character information of the character information circuit 12 thereon.
