An imaging apparatus is equipped with: an imaging element having a plurality of photoelectric converting elements, each of which converts image information borne by input light into a pixel signal and outputs the pixel signal; pixel signal combining means, for combining the pixel signals output from each photoelectric converting element of the imaging element into groups of predetermined numbers of signals; and image signal processing means, for generating digital image data from the combined pixel signals. The pixel signal combining means combines the pixel signals such that pixel signals at the central portions of ranges of pixel signals to be combined are weighted to have higher gain than pixel signals at the peripheral portions of the ranges to obtain high quality digital image data.
