The method involves forming a signal which characterizes the actuation of the driving state code device. The signal is recognized by the driver. The information is determined and evaluated over the active inserted gear in an automatic gear drive after actuation of driving state code device. Another information is determined and evaluated which characterizes the performance of a gear change to a time point or the performance of marginally delayed actual gear change. An error information is formed in the absence of one of the two information.
