Determining whether a browser object is present within a cache located at a users endpoint system by receiving a request for the browser object at a content or intermediate server; preparing a response to the request by adding a cookie to the response, where the cookie contains information representing the browser object; retrieving the cookie from a subsequent request from the user, parsing it and then storing representative information about the browser object expected to be stored in the endpoint cache. The internet browser object may be a compound object embedding several browser objects. The method is designed to allow an intermediate server to tailor the browser objects associated with a requested webpage in order to take account of objects already cached by the user. An intermediate server may also be used for communication of web pages containing browser objects.
