A video coding device is disclosed for encoding a video frame by using a plurality of motion-compensated interframe-prediction methods. The device comprises a motion vector searching means (331) for searching motion vectors of a video frame; a prediction means (332) for dividing the video frame into one or more areas and producing a plurality of predicted images for each of the respective divided areas by applying the motion vectors and the plurality of the prediction methods; an area prediction deciding means (333) for determining the most adaptive one of the plurality of the prediction methods for each of the divided areas according to coding efficiencies of the produced predictive images and outputting side-information indicating the decided prediction methods and the motion vectors and the predicted image; and a side-information coding means (334) for encoding the side-information, said means capable of coding the side-information for indicating motion vectors of an objective codable area by utilizing motion vectors of one or more neighboring areas decided to be encoded by a prediction method which is different from the prediction method decided for said objective codable area. <??>A corresponding video decoding device is also disclosed. <IMAGE>
