The invention relates to a method for determining a transmission ratio (rcvr) to be set of a continuously variable transmission unit in order to emulate an alternative transmission assembly, and to a corresponding drive system. Firstly, an actual input characteristic variable and an actual output characteristic variable of the continuously variable transmission unit are determined. On the basis of the actual input characteristic variable and the actual output characteristic variable, a theoretical output torque (Mab,th) of the alternative transmission assembly is determined. By taking the theoretical output torque (Mab,th) of the alternative transmission assembly into consideration, the transmission ratio (rcvr) to be set of the continuously variable transmission unit is determined, wherein said transmission ratio (rcvr) is determined in such a way that the driven torque (Mab,ist) produced by the continuously variable transmission unit corresponds to the theoretical output torque (Mab,th). For this purpose, in addition to the continuously variable transmission unit, the drive system has a control unit (16) having a first input and a second input for reading the characteristic variables. Connected to the inputs is a calculation section (30) which, on the basis of the characteristic variables, determines the theoretical output torque (Mab,th) of the alternative transmission assembly.
