A control system 80 for an electric motor 84 comprises means for supplying excitation current 86a-c to different windings of the motor at any given time. The amplitude of the excitation current is controlled 88, 92 to be independently variable of the timing and duration 110 of the commutation of the excitation current. A current supply feedback loop, for providing a current amplitude, and a commutation feedback loop, separate from the current supply feedback loop, for controlling the timing and duration of the excitation current, may be provided. The motor may be a permanent magnet alternating current (PMAC) motor. The motor may have permanent magnets in contact with one another without spaces to provide a continuous permanent magnet shell. A generator having such a permanent magnet shell is also described. The arrangement may be used as part of a forced induction system for an internal combustion engine. |
