A matrix converter includes a plurality of semiconductor switch modules (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7, Q8, Q9), and a plurality of snubber modules (SM1, SM2, SM3, SM4, SM5, SM6) each having a plurality of capacitors (C1, C2, C3) and a plurality of diodes. Each of the snubber modules (SM1, SM2, SM3, SM4, SM5, SM6) has a terminal group projecting outward, a first terminal, and a second terminal. The first and second terminals project from positions different from the terminal group, and are connected to an external circuit (14) provided outside the matrix converter. Terminals of the terminal group are connected to terminals of a corresponding semiconductor switch module (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7, Q8, Q9). The first terminals of the plurality of snubber modules (SM1, SM2, SM3, SM4, SM5, SM6) are connected to one another via a first bus bar (41), and the second terminals are connected to one another via a second bus bar (42).
