PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extra-high-pressure mercury lamp capable of obtaining high illuminance although electrode intervals are almost comparable with those of a conventional one. SOLUTION: In the extra-high-pressure mercury lamp provided with a pair of electrodes 3a, 3b on both ends and a light-emitting tube 1 sealed with mercury sealed inside, one of the pair of electrodes 3a, 3b is moved by a given distance toward a bulb center 8a side of the light-emitting tube 1. Most preferably, the electrode intervals are not changed, a point for the illuminance of a center side near a tip of one of the electrodes to be maximized is displaced to the bulb center 8a.
