The method involves obtaining an internet protocol (IP) address on a local area network (102), and establishing a channel with a virtual private network server (103-A) of a remote equipment (103) via a wide area network (101). A private network IP address is received from a configuration server (103-B) of the remote equipment. An IP configuration e.g. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) type configuration, is received using an IP terminal (105), connected to a router, from the configuration server via the router through the channel.
