<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for allowing a scanner to exchange, with an external device, scan messages including a WS scan protocol message and a DSM protocol message. <P>SOLUTION: It is determined which message is included in a scan message, a WS scan protocol message or a DSM protocol message. If the scan message is a WS scan protocol message, the WS scan protocol message is responded to. If the scan message is a DSM protocol message, the DSM protocol message is responded to.
