<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating composition capable of forming a coating film which has depth feeling due to high chroma entirely and lightness and hue variation from highlight (near specularly reflected light) to shade (oblique direction) and can be applied to various industrial products, particularly an automotive outer panel; and to provide a method for forming the coating film, by which such a coating film can be formed. <P>SOLUTION: The coating composition contains: a scale-like interference pigment obtained by coating a translucent scale-like base material with a metal oxide; and a colored metallic pigment obtained by forming an amorphous silicon oxide layer and a metal layer on a scale-like metallic base material and further coating the surface with metal particles.
