<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake device of a passenger conveyor that facilitates adjusting a force of friction materials for holding a rotor. <P>SOLUTION: The brake device includes: a plate-like rotor 52 connected to a sprocket with a footstep chain fitted thereto to rotate together with the sprocket, and having a plurality of engaging parts around a rotation center; an engaging body arranged movably between an engaging position engaged with the engaging parts 62 and a retreating position not to be engaged with the engaging parts 62; a detecting means detecting a failure of a circulation movement condition of the footstep chain; a moving means moving the engaging body from the retreating position to the engaging position based on a detection result by the detecting means; and calipers 70 holding the rotor 52 via a pair of the friction materials and connecting the rotor 52 to the sprocket.
