PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device with satisfactory user-friendliness of a user by starting the recording and reproducing device from an initially set mode. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing device of the present invention is constituted by providing a first mode for energizing the device via a first switch to make the device into a standby state and a second mode for making the device into the standby state by energizing neither the first switch nor the second switch, when the device is made into the standby state after varying periods of the first mode and the second mode and energizing the whole recording and reproducing device, selecting a mode set to a state before the periods of the first mode and the second mode are varied.
