The invention relates to a bed which aims to minimize the risk of bedsores developing on a person using it. The bed includes a frame including a base (14), a mattress (38) supported on the base, at least one mattress lifter body- mounted on the frame and standing proud of the base, and displacement means for displacing the mattress lifter body along a path that extends at least a part of the length of the base. Through such displacement, a bulge induced in the mattress by the lifter body is propagated along the mattress to alter pressure on the body of the person and induce movement in the person. The mattress lifter body typically is one of a pair of such bodies, each in the form of a roller arrangement (16, 18).
