Provided is an aromatic copolymer that has a sulfonate group and that has superior chemical stability before and after electricity generation. The aromatic copolymer contains a structural unit represented by formula (1) and a structural unit represented by formula (2). (In formula (1): R1 each independently represents a halogen atom, a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1-20 carbon atoms, or a monovalent halogenated hydrocarbon group having 1-20 carbon atoms; a represents an integer from 0 to 3; and k represents an integer from 1 to 4. However, a and k are integers such that a + k = 4. Additionally, the plurality of R1 may be the same or different. In formula (2), Ar1 is an organic group having 3-30 carbon atoms and having a heterocyclic structure containing nitrogen.)
