PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus for controlling the rotation phase of an image bearing member is provided to reduce time for requesting the control of rotation phase. CONSTITUTION: A transfer body(104) transfers an overlapping relation of a toner image on a first image carrier(101a) and a toner image on a second image carrier. A phase difference detector detects rotation phase difference between the first image carrier and the second image carrier. A controller controls the phase of the first image carrier based on the detected rotation phase difference.
