<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively suppress an image flicker caused by switching of a polarization direction while reducing speckle noise. <P>SOLUTION: A polarization switching part 6 is disposed in the optical path of a laser beam to a projection surface A and periodically switches the polarization direction of a laser beam emitted from the switching part 6 to p-polarization light and s-polarization light. A laser control part 13 controls laser light sources 2a to 2c in synchronization with switching in the polarization switching part 6 and, when the polarization direction of the laser beam is p-polarization, determines a driving current according to the tone to be displayed depending on the driving current characteristics for p-polarization light.
