<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roll paper loading and unloading mechanism for a printer that easily performs the loading/unloading operation of roll paper used as a printing medium. <P>SOLUTION: The roll paper loading and unloading mechanism for the printer 1 using the roll paper 11 as the printing medium includes: a roll holder 9a that is inserted into the core part of the roll paper 11; a guide roller 80 that is pivotally supported to freely rotate at both ends of the roll holder 9a; and two plate frames 70L and 70R that support the roll holder 9a in order to hold the roll paper 11 at the predetermined position of the printer 1. A horizontal upper end face 70U is formed on the plate frames 70L and 70R, the horizontal upper end face 70U with which the guide roller 80 is engaged and rolled, thereby making it possible to move the roll holder 9a in a horizontal direction, and two holding rollers 73 for supporting the roll holder 9a in order to hold the roll paper 11 at the predetermined position are provided at positions lower than the horizontal upper end face 70U.
