PURPOSE: A secondary battery is provided to prevent the heat-contraction of a separator or the short of a cathode and an anode due to failure in case of abnormal heat generation to a battery. CONSTITUTION: A secondary battery comprises a stacked electrode assembly in which a room-shaped positive electrode plate(2) and a room-shaped negative electrode plate are laminated through a separator. The positive electrode plate is arranged inside the pocket-shaped separator(13). The width of the separator projected from one end of the positive electrode plate in one side of the separator which is not contacted, is larger than the width of the separator projected from one end of the positive electrode plate in one side of the separator which is contacted. The thermal contract ratio of vertical direction to one side of the separator which is not contacted is larger than the thermal contact ratio of parallel direction to one side of the separator which is not contacted.
