<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which satisfies at least one characteristic or is well-balanced in at least two characteristics among the characteristics such as higher limit of a temperature range of a nematic phase, lower limit of the temperature range of the nematic phase, small viscosity, large optical anisotropy, large dielectric anisotropy, large specific resistance, high stability to ultraviolet light, high stability to heat and so forth, and to provide an AM element which has a short response time, a large voltage holding ratio, a large contrast ratio, a long service life and so forth. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a specific bicyclic compound having large optical anisotropy as a first component and a specific tetracyclic compound having large dielectric anisotropy as a second component, may contain a specific bicyclic to tetracyclic compound having extremely small viscosity as a third component, and has a nematic phase.
