The camera (10) has two image sensors (14a, 14b) to record two raw images of a monitored area (12). An illumination unit (20) projects a structured lighting pattern (28) into the monitored area. A stereoscopy charging unit (30) charges the two raw images to a three-dimensional depth map. A diagnostic image generation unit (40) generates a two-dimensional diagnostic image from a raw image, which is received during projection of the pattern. The illumination unit comprises a pattern generation element (26) e.g. slide, mask, phase plate or diffractive optical element. An independent claim is also included for a method for recording a three-dimensional depth map and a two-dimensional diagnostic image.
