A process and apparatus is disclosed for the production of aqueous HCI from a material that contains chlorine atoms, the process comprising plasma treating the material in a plasma treatment unit to produce an off-gas containing at least some of the chlorine atoms; and passing at least some of the off-gas to a condensing unit to recover HCl in an aqueous form. The material used may be air pollution control residue such as fly ash. The plasma treatment may form a slag which is continuously removed. |
