The use of compounds with a branched phenol structure containing at least 2 aromatic residues as chain-stoppers in polycarbonate, polyester-carbonate or polyester synthesis. The use of compounds of formula HO-Ar1-X-Ar2-(Y-W)n (1) as chain-stoppers in polycarbonate, polyester-carbonate or polyester synthesis. Ar1, Ar2 = optionally substituted mono- or poly-nuclear aromatic residues; X, Y = a single bond or a divalent unit such as -O- or -CO-; W = an optionally substituted aromatic residue or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residue; n = 1-5 Independent claims are also included for (a) (A) a method for the production of polycarbonates, polyester-carbonates or polyesters by using (1) as chain-cleavage agents (b) (B) compounds of formula (2) and compounds of formula (3) (c) (C) polycarbonates, polyesters and polyester-carbonates with end groups of formula -O-Ar1-X-Ar2-(Y-W)n (d) (D) molded and extruded products made from polycarbonates as in (C) R1, R2, R4, R5 = H, 1-18C alkyl, Cl or Br; X, Y = as above; R3, R7 = H, 1-18C alkyl, cyclic 5-18C alkyl, phenyl, phenyloxy, phenylcarboxy, benzyl, benzyloxy, naphthyl, naphthyloxy or naphthylcarboxy; R6 = 1-18C alkyl or cyclic 5-18C alkyl; m = 0-3; n = 2-5; (m+n) = not more than 5 |
