The method involves generating a reference signal by filtering a detection signal, and defining a detection threshold relative to the reference signal. An object is passed from a non-detecting state to object detecting state when the value of the detection signal is greater or respectively lower than the detection threshold. Value of the reference signal is readjusted such that the value of the detection signal is lower or respectively greater than the detection threshold when the value of the detection signal is greater or respectively lower than the detection threshold. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product comprising executable code to perform a method for detecting an object (2) a proximity detector comprising a proximity sensor (3) a portable device comprising an element.
