A fibre cutting device (16) and method for cutting one or more exposed portions (10,12,14) of a through-thickness fibre (6,8) in a surface of a composite material (2), the device comprising: a cutting element (18) for cutting the one or more exposed portions (10,12,14); a suction device which is operable to extract the cut exposed portions (47) from the surface (38) of the composite material (2); and a storage device for receiving the cut exposed portions.
