In a TDMA system, a plurality of subscriber units (SU; 12, 14, 22) and a plurality of base radios (BR; 5, 7, 13) provide access to a channel for voice transmissions. A SU requests a voice transmission by pressing ~push to talk~ on a mobile unit (202). The SU then determines whether the voice transmissions is provisioned for ~polite~ channel access (216). If the ~polite~ channel access specifies that the SU be ~polite~ to all (216), then the SU sends negative feedback to the SU user (220). Alternatively, if the ~polite~ channel access specifies that the SU not be ~polite~ to all (218), but be ~polite~ to its own color code (218), then the SU performs time slot synchronization with the BR.
