The printer (1.7) has a random access unit for randomly accessing a file via a communication network (1.1), where the file is stored by a printing client of the communication network and describes the document to be printed. A transmitting unit transmits a request to the printing client to obtain a section of the file describing the document to be printed, and a receiving unit receives the section.
