<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for encoding serial data to transfer the data to a recording head when the number of recording dots in recording data for one column is less than or equal to a predetermined number. <P>SOLUTION: A printing apparatus includes: first serial data indicating a nozzle for ejecting ink among nozzles of a recording head for each bit as one column of the recording data; generation means for generating second serial data for encoding and indicating information on a nozzle position using a plurality of dots, whose data length is shorter than the first serial data; and a transfer means for transferring the first serial data to the recording head when the number of bits indicating recording of one column of recording data by ejecting the ink by the recording head is greater than a predetermined number, and for transferring the second serial data to the recording head when the number of bits is less than or equal to the predetermined number.
